지역원 소개
1990년대 초에 지역연구에 관심이 많았던 교수들의 연구모임(지역연구방법론연구회)을 통하여 1996년 아주지역연구소(1997년 명칭 변경으로 아시아지역연구소)가 출범하였고, 그 이후 연구활동이 주로 동남아시아 지역연구에 집중됨에 따라 2007년 7월 동남아시아연구소로 개칭하여 초대 소장으로 배양수 교수가 부임하였다. 이로부터 본격적인 동남아시아 지역에 관한 중점적인 연구활동이 개시되었다. 2008년 9월 박장식 교수가 2대 소장직을 맡으면서 2009년 한국연구재단의 인문한국(HK)지원사업 해외지역연구에 본 연구소가 선정되어 향후 10년간 안정된 연구활동을 펼치게 되었다. 2010년 2월부터 보다 효율적인 사업을 펼치기 위하여 동남아지역원으로 명칭 변경하였다.
History of ISEAS
In the early 1990s, through numerous professors who were interested in the regional research and studies at the research seminars for area studies, the Institute of Asian Studies in 1996 (renamed in 1997 as the Institute of Asian Area Studies) was launched. Since then, the research was mainly concentrated in Southeast Asia, thus renamed its institute as the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies in July 2007 and Professor Bae Yang-Soo was appointed as the first director. Since this period, Southeast Asia has been the central focus in the research area.
In September 2008, Professor Park Jang-Sik became the second director. In 2009, since the institute was fully supported with the Humanities Korea Project by the National Research Foundation of Korea, its research activity will be stabilizing for the next 10 years. In February 2010, in order to manage more efficient research business, the title of the institute has been changed as the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS).
설립 목적
동남아지역원은 현재 11개국을 망라하는 동남아시아 지역의 정치, 경제, 사회, 역사, 문화, 예술, 문학, 언어 등 제반 분야에 걸쳐 종합적이고 학제적인 연구방법을 통하여 동남아시아를 총체적인 지역단위로 인식하는 새로운 시각의 지역연구를 시도한다. 또한, 효율적인 교과과정으로 구성되는 대학원 과정을 개설하여 차세대 연구자를 육성하는 데에도 중점을 두고자 한다., 이 지역에 관한 최신 정보 및 자료의 수집,정리, 분석을 통하여 전문가 및 일반인에게 그 결과를 제공하고, 일반인을 대상으로 하는 각종 교육프로그램을 설치하여 동남아의 전반적인 지식을 대중에게 확산시키는 데에도 기여하고자 한다.
Mission
In ISEAS/BUFS, we are aiming at recognizing Southeast Asia as a whole unit, consisting of 11 nations, throughout the multidisciplinary studies of various subjects, establishing a methodology of Southeast Asian studies. Furthermore, we would like to focus in developing the new generation’s researchers, therefore in our graduate school’s curriculum; we will create more efficient research education based programs to generate this goal. In addition, any Southeast Asia related information such as current news or data collections is organized, and analyzed by the professionals and provided to the researchers and even to the public. Also, in the future, in order to gain interest in the media we are creating various public education programs that will further target the public to spread and share knowledge of Southeast Asia.
